Support For ‘Africa’s Best’ As Downs Look To Wrap Up PSL Title Race

Mamelodi Sundowns’ Denis Onyango has been backed to keep his position as the team’s number one goalkeeper as coach Pitso Mosimane and his team look to finish the race for the Absa Premiership title on a high and defend the title.

Following an uncharacteristic error by Onyango during the match against Polokwane City, the shot-stopper received criticism from some sections of the fans, with some suggesting that he should be benched for upcoming matches.

However, the Ugandan international kept his position in Mosimane’s line-up for the match against Bidvest Wits last weekend.

Against Cape Town City on Wednesday, Downs had Kennedy Mweene in goals, while Reyaad Pieterse deputised for him on the bench, as Onyango missed the match due to an injury he picked against Wits last Saturday.

Former Sundowns goalkeeper, Thembalethu Moses, is backing Onyango to continue as the team’s number one on his return from injury.

“I don’t have a problem with Onyango continuing as the number one. We all know that Onyango is one of the best goalkeepers we have in Africa. He’s probably the number one in Africa at present. He’s part of the Africa XI team,” Moses told the Siya crew.

“He can’t be judged based on the mistake he made against Polokwane City. Best goalkeepers in the world commit such mistakes. If you can remember during the World Cup (last year), David de Gea made a mistake (Spain v Portugal). The boy from Liverpool (Loris Karius) also made some mistakes. As a goalkeeper, there will be moments when you make some mistakes but you will have to man up. It would be unfair to judge a goalkeeper by only one mistake,” added the ex-shot-stopper.
