Dauda Parries Ghana Into Semi-Finals

2013 AFCON

Result: Ghana 2-0 Cape Verde

Date: 2 February 2013

Venue: Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium

Ghana goalkeeper Fatau Dauda put on stunning performance to keep out a determined Cape Verde as the Black Stars progressed to the semi-finals of the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations thanks to a 2-0 win over the minnows

The score was nowhere near reflective of the game as Cape Verde were on top for the majority of the game in terms of chances, but their failure to beat Dauda brought an end to their dream run in the tournament.

Cape Verde were remarkably calm at the start of the game and their passes were stringing together nicely, but their final ball was lacking.

The Blue Sharks would have the first clear chance of the game in the 13th minute when Marco Soares shaped to volley but he slipped and his strike fell for Julio Tavares who teed up Ramos Heldon but his side-footed finish went well over.

The Black Stars started to look a little livelier at the other end but were struggling for clear-cut chances - with Asamoah Gyan failing to bury a header.

Heldon then lashed a ferocious drive just off target in the 22nd minute while Ghana goalkeeper Fatau Dauda did well to snatch a low cross from Julio Tavares soon after.

The match became fairly scrappy with both sides going in with tough challenges, which saw Mohammed Rabiu and Elvis Babanco receive yellow cards.

The same trend continued in the dying minutes of the half as the deadlock remained at the break.

Cape Verde started the second period brightly and had a shot on target minutes in but moments later a shoulder charge from Carlitos on Gyan resulted in the referee pointing to the spot. Mubarak Wakaso stepped up and slammed it straight down the middle to put Ghana ahead.

The Blue Sharks fought back and in the 55th minute Heldon failed to hit the target after the ball had fallen to him inside the area while Luis Platini curled a superb shot toward the top corner but the goalkeeper clawed it out for a corner.

Cape Verde were looking dangerous on every attack while Ghana struggled to deal with any of the set-pieces and a terrific corner from the Blue Sharks somehow missed everyone in the area as Cape Verde continued to look the more dangerous side.

Dauda had to make a sensational one-handed save to keep out Djaniny powerful strike while Mubarak could have wrapped things up on the break at the other end but blazed over.

The Ghana stopper continued to be the top performer for Ghana as he pulled off another crucial save late on to keep out a goalbound free-kick from Heldon.

Cape Verde had everyone up including the goalkeeper for a corner in stoppage time and the ball broke for Wakaso who stormed up to the other end and side-footed into the open goal to secure progress for the Black Stars.

Standard Bank Moment of the Match: Ghana goalkeeper Dauda pulled off a number of game changing saved, but his full-stretch effort in stoppage time was arguably the most important as Cape Verde looked for a late equaliser.
