Kaizer Chiefs’ Daniel Cardoso will be one of the only Amakhosi players to come out of this season with any real personal satisfaction, but he says the defeat to Chippa United was ‘heartbreaking’.
The 29-year-old has been almost ever-present for the Glamour Boys this season, playing a vital role in making sure that the club has the joint best defensive record in the league.
However, that defence was badly breached over the weekend as the club succumbed to their worst league defeat in nearly 10 years, with Chippa putting three past Itumeleng Khune to romp home to a 3-0 victory.
Cardoso, who is on a yellow card against Platinum Stars this weekend, away from missing the Nedbank Cup semi-final, says that the team need to make sure they bounce back.
He told the club’s official website, “We’ve got a point to prove. We were lethargic against Chippa United. As players, we need to step up our game. We want to win Sunday’s game for our supporters, as we want to make them happy.
“The result was not only heartbreaking for our supporters, it was heartbreaking for us as well. We felt their pain, but it is important to realise that we form one team, we need to stick together.”
Meanwhile, regarding their Sunday opponents, Cardoso said, “They are fighting for survival, they are a good team and they will come out in an attacking mood as they have nothing to lose. It’s a must-win game for us. We have four league games left and we want to win all our remaining matches. We owe this to ourselves and, above all, to our supporters. We want them to feel proud of their team.”
The game was originally set for Saturday night, but will now be played on Sunday afternoon at 15h00.
