Daine Klate’s Ever-Growing Trophy Cabinet…

Despite recently lifting his 15th trophy, Daine Klate doesn’t get bored of that winning feeling. He’s the most decorated player in the PSL era, keeping motivated by knowing that any final could be his last.

Since his first senior trophy back in 2004 with SuperSport United, Klate has developed a habit of winning trophies wherever he goes, and at 32 doesn’t seem to have any intentions of stopping just yet.
But football can be a cruel game, and ‘Klatey’ is well aware that at some point his luck could run out.
“I need to make the most of it because any final could be my last final,” he tells the Siya crew. “That walk out before a final game is special, knowing that you’re going into this match with a medal and trophy at stake. And of course, the financial reward that goes with it.”
The 2010 PSL Player of the Season averages more than one trophy per campaign since his debut back in 2004/05, and has won at least three trophies with every team that he’s been at since leaving SuperSport for Orlando Pirates and then moving on to Bidvest Wits.
So what’s his secret?
“My secret has always been to try and contribute positively to the success of the team. I’ve never played for myself. Of course, there will always be right moves at the right time, but I couldn’t have predicted winning with Pirates in my first season or Wits winning the league for the first time.”
As he prepares to celebrate his 33rd birthday in February, Klate is philosophical about his future regardless of his age, telling the crew, “I’ll just play it as it comes… I can’t really predict when I’ll call it a day, but I know that my path has been set out. I’ve just got to have faith and keep doing the right things on and off the pitch. Everything else will fall into place.”
