Theft, Police Affidavits & More, Controversy Galore In 5-Goal Thriller

Cape Town City have revealed the shocking details of what led to their DStv Premiership fixture against Maritzburg United, which was played under protest on Tuesday.

The Team of Choice decided to play their away match in the Mother City under protest after the Citizens failed to produce the original players’ playing cards, among other issues; and the club’s media officer Julian Bailey has since opened up about the events which led to the controversial moment.

As revealed by the Siya crew last night, Siya sources indicated that the City team manager’s (Moenier Davids) car was broken into before the match and his bag with the players’ cards and team sheet were some of the items stolen.

“The break-in happened round about two hours before kick-off. Our team manager was in his personal car which he stopped at the Spar opposite the stadium to buy a few things that the players needed. So, he went inside the store and the car was locked with all his belongings in there: laptop, printer and everything he normally brings to the stadium. Among those things were the players’ cards and the team sheet for the match as well as all the documents we needed. They broke into his car and afterwards we looked at the footage from the store and it shows clearly that there was a break-in. They left with all of his bags and all of his belongings,” said Bailey.

“Obviously, we made the match officials aware of this and we made the opponents aware of it. We showed them the video footage as well. We also got a police affidavit just to confirm it. The players were not aware of that. We tried our best to keep it away from them so that they continued to focus on preparing for the game. So, the players didn’t notice anything up until maybe just before the warm-up.

“The usual protocol is that the cards will be checked and produced with the match jersey to the fourth official and a representative from the opposition. When that didn’t happen, they started asking questions, but we had obviously shifted the attention back to the warm-up and we got them out on the field to get ready. After that it was a big debate between us and the away team Maritzburg United who obviously decided to play under protest. But we managed to get our documentation together very quickly. We got a copy of each card which we had at our offices, and we got someone to bring that to the stadium. We printed new team sheets and we printed all the documentation we needed and that was submitted to the match commissioner so that the game could go ahead as planned.

“There were some doubts whether the game would be played or not, but we managed to find a solution. We sought help from the PSL who gave us the necessary guidance and they acted swiftly and spoke to us and the opposition, as well as the match officials and we were happy that the match could go ahead, and we won it at the end of the day,” the club official added.

Bailey confirmed that the club has started with the process to enable them to acquire new players’ cards, possibly before their fixture against Baroka FC on Saturday.

According to Rule 4.10. of the PSL rules, “In the absence of an original registration card, the principle of “no card, no play” will apply. A Player who takes the field despite not having provided an original registration card at the pre-match inspection will be ineligible. The sanction set out in this clause will be applied to the Player and his Member Club together with any other sanction deemed appropriate by the Disciplinary Committee.”
