The Premier Soccer League has on Wednesday morning confirmed the first recipients of the coach and player of the month awards for the season.
Manqoba Mngqithi and Rulani Mokwena were the obvious winners following a near perfect start in which Mamelodi Sundowns won five of their six matches and were only held to a draw in one of them since the 2021/22 campaign got underway.
Picking up from where they left off when they clinched a fourth successive league title in May, the Brazilians are simply the team to beat.
Their record has been impeccable: AmaZulu (1-0 win), Chippa United (0-0 draw), Kaizer Chiefs (2-0 win), TS Galaxy (3-0 win), Orlando Pirates (2-0 win) and Swallows (3-0 win) – leaving the four points clear at the summit.
When it comes to the Player of the Month, the judges voted for Peter Shalulile who is the joint top goal scorer alongside Victor Letsoalo.
In a statement, the league explained how the decision was made.
"They got the nod for their consistency in getting positive results despite being faced with negative results in their camp at the start of the season. The league-winning coaches have also impressively created amazing continuity within the team in the new season by getting new recruits to gel and play the Brazilians style of play such as Grant Kekana, Thabiso Kutumela and Neo Maema," read the press release.
Orlando Pirates’ Deon Hotto was also awarded the DStv Premiership Goal of the Month for his strike against Stellenbosch FC.
For their awards, Shalulile, Hotto and the co-coaches will receive a trophy and R7, 000 courtesy of league sponsors, DStv.
Judges: Mark Gleeson (convenor, SuperSport), Sazi Hadebe (Sunday Times), Daniel Mothowagae (City Press), Mninawa Ntloko (Times Live), Thato Moeng (SuperSport), Velile Mnyandu (SABC Radio), Nyiko Sithole (Munghana Lonene FM).
