Chippa United midfielder Larry Cohen has been told by the club that he can start looking for a new team, following the appointment of Wilfred Mugeyi as the side’s new head coach.
The 25-year-old was constantly overlooked by a string of Chilli Boys coaches prior to the appointment of Farouk Abrahams, however Abrahams recognised the former Jomo Cosmos man’s talent and drafted him into the line-up.
Cohen repaid his coach’s faith with a string of fine performances and a handful of goals, helping the struggling Chippa to avoid defeat in six of the eight games that he featured in.
Since breaking into the side Cohen has attracted interest from a number of PSL clubs and it comes as a shock that one of the club’s best performers in recent times has now been told that he is no longer in the club’s plans.
Rumours have been circulating that Abrahams was fired because some of the squad members felt like he was giving preferential treatment to some of his ‘favourite’ players, some of which have since been told that they can leave.
A source close to the club explained, “Some of the players that had been starting early in the season and were then dropped by Farouk had gotten upset because they weren’t playing. They’d gotten their opportunity and had not done the business, they were frustrated at not playing.”
Now, despite his good form, Cohen looks likely to leave Chippa for a minimal fee following their decision to deem him surplus to requirements, along with five other members of their playing staff.
Two players, in Masonwabe Bovu and Gift Sithole, have already left the club for Golden Arrows, with Stanton Lewis going the other way.
