Solo: The PSL’s Only Representative At The World Cup…
A total of 736 players will earn the right to represent their nation at this year’s FIFA World Cup, but only one of them is set to be a player playing in South Africa’s Absa Premiership.
With Bafana Bafana once again not present at the global showpiece after they missed out in qualifying, the PSL’s sole representative will be Chippa United’s Daniel Akpeyi, who was named in the Super Eagles’ 23-man squad on Sunday night.
The shot-stopper played 25 games for the Chilli Boys this season across all competitions, cementing his place as their number one, despite the changing of head coaches during the campaign.
Now, having been named alongside Ikechukwu Ezenwa and Francis Uzoho, the Chippa star will be eager to stake his claim for a starting berth when the Nigerians come up against Croatia in their first game of the 2018 finals in Russia.
While Akpeyi is the oldest named goalkeeper, it has been young Uzoho who has been Gernot Rohr’s starter in recent friendlies, although the South African-based keeper could get a runout against the Czech Republic on Wednesday night.
As things stand, the goalkeeper will be the only player representing the Absa Premiership in Russia, with none of the other four African nations featuring any Mzansi-based footballers.
