While Chippa United general manager Wandisile Mbenguzana tried in vain to explain the exact reason for the club parting ways with head coach, Farouk Abrahams, Soccer-Laduma can reveal that former captain Gift Sithole has also been given the boot.
The Tembisa-born defender, who was presented with a second-hand car for his sterling performances last season, was stunned very early on Tuesday morning after receiving a call from club boss Siviwe ‘Chippa’ Mpengesi to say ‘don’t come in today’.
Before grabbing the first flight out of Cape Town in search of a new club, the shocked Sithole confirmed his release, although he was reluctant to go into detail. However, a source has questioned why the player’s contract was terminated and revealed that up to six Chippa players could also be shown the door.
“Why get rid of your Player of the Year just like that?” he said. “Right now Chippa doesn’t need the pretty footballers they need soldiers like Gift (Sithole), who go out to fight. He’s loyal, will keep quiet, do his job and doesn’t ask for a lot of money.”
Mbenguzana told the media that ‘grievances from his players’, many of whom had asked to be loaned out, was one of the main causes that led to Abrahams’ sacking.
However in the same breath, he baffled a local radio station by stating that an enquiry found nothing concrete to say the coach was guilty, which begs the question of what exactly is going on behind the scenes at the struggling PSL club!
