Chippa United media officer Lukanyo Mzinzi has explained to the Siya crew that Benjani Mwaruwari disappeared from the club due to contractual issues with the club’s boss, Siviwe Mpengesi.
Mwaruwari is currently not part of the team, as they prepare for their PSL Promotion/Relegation Play-off against Santos, on June 23.
In issue 826 of Soccer-Laduma, Mwaruwari’s agent, Ralph Nkomo, said that the player would make a decision on his future at the end of the playoffs with Chippa. However, it now seems that the striker could not wait any longer and has decided to leave the club ahead of the Cape derby against Santos on Sunday.
“With regards to Benjani the issue is between him and the chairman (Siviwe Mpengesi). I wouldn’t say he has gone AWOL. It is about contract issues. We hear that he is linked with Wits at the moment. The chairman is busy with a lot of things, including our participation in the playoffs. But there is a rumour that Wits want him,” said Mzinzi.
Mwaruwari penned a short-term deal when he joined Chippa earlier this year. He scored one goal in eight starts, during his spell with the side in the 2012/13 PSL season.
The striker has been linked with a move to Wits, as reported by Soccer-Laduma last week.
