Chippa United have made their feelings known about the quality of officiating during their game against Jomo Cosmos on Friday night.
The Chilli Boys were leading 2-1 when referee Bafana Mosia awarded what looked to be a dubious penalty for Ezenkosi, who went on to equalise from the resultant spot kick. A source told the Siya crew, “The ref saw the Cosmos players screaming and thought it was a hand ball, but it wasn’t."
He continued, "James Okwuosa didn’t do anything, which is why he ran up to the referee, wanting to beat him up. He was restrained by Andile Mbenyane. Even Jomo Sono smiled and shook his head when the penalty was awarded because he also couldn’t believe it. I think he wanted to do justice by awarding Cosmos a penalty, as he had earlier given one to Chippa.”
Chippa United’s Chief Operations Officer Peter Koutroulis said that the club has written a letter of complaint to the PSL and Safa. He added, “We weren’t happy with the referee’s performance. Why did they pick a referee from Soweto for this crucial game when we have so many referees around the country, in places like Durban, Bloemfontein and East London? There were also no PSL games this past weekend."
"When the referee performs like that, in my mind and in the minds of the people watching, there is something behind it. I even spoke to the match commissioner on Monday and he said, ‘Peter, this man was pathetic.’ At the end of the day, football is a business for us and it’s not right that every week I have to complain in Soccer-Laduma about the same thing. It’s not fair!"
He concluded, "I understand that referees are human and they make mistakes, but what I don’t understand is a referee telling my captain that he can’t give us a second penalty because he has already given us a penalty. We can’t tolerate this anymore!”
