Kaizer Chiefs will not be releasing players for the upcoming CHAN tournament, the club has stated through its official website.
Bafana Bafana coach, Gordon Igesund, named his squad for the tournament on Monday, and included six players from Amakhosi, namely Siphiwe Tshabalala, Reneilwe Letsholonyane, Bernard Parker, Itumeleng Khune, Tsepo Masilela and Tefu Mashamaite.
Just days before the announcement of the team, the PSL revealed that the fixture between Mamelodi Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs had been moved to January.
The decision meant that Orlando Pirates, AmaZulu, Ajax Cape Town, SuperSport United, Sundowns and Chiefs would not be under pressure to release players.
However, Igesund had revealed that he was quite surprised by the PSL statement, as his initial discussions with SAFA president Danny Jordaan did not involve talk of Amakhosi and the Brazilians.
Chiefs have now acted after Igesund's decision to call up players from the club, with Chiefs Football Manager Bobby Motaung saying, via a statement, "We have expressed ourselves to SAFA well in advance. Chiefs are scheduled to play in a PSL league fixture against Mamelodi Sundowns on 23rd January 2014. We have to prepare for CAF Championship as well."
The statement said that "Chiefs will not be releasing their players as the tournament is not sanctioned by Fifa", but also that "Chiefs would like to reaffirm their commitment to support the National Team within reason and as they have done so previously."
