FullTime: Moroka Swallows 0-2 Kaizer Chiefs
Date: 31 January 2014
Venue: Dobsonville Stadium
A goal in each half from Kingston Nkhatha and Knowledge Musona saw Kaizer Chiefs beat Moroka Swallows 2-0 in an Absa Premiership match at Dobsonville Stadium on Friday night.
The result was Chiefs' eighth in a row in the league and sees them go 10 points clear at the top of the table ahead of second placed SuperSport United who beat Tuks 1-0 also on Friday night.
It was a blistering start to the game from Chiefs who opened the scoring as early as the fourth minute when Siphiwe Tshabalala slipped Nkhatha through on goal, and the Zimbabwean international made no mistake with a clinical finish, 1-0.
Two minutes later Tshabalala should really have doubled his side’s lead when he beat two defenders on his way into the box, but his left-footed shot from 16-yards out skimmed the wrong side of the post.
In the tenth minute Chiefs were on the attack again as George Lebese whipped in an early cross from the left wing, but Nkhatha was inches away from getting onto the end of what would have been a tap in at the back post.
Swallows’ first effort on goal came from a set-piece in the 18th minute as Dikgang Mabalane fired a 30-yard free-kick over the crossbar.
Six minutes later and Swallows created their second chance after a swift counter-attack concluded with Mabalane firing a 16-yard shot straight at Itumeleng Khune.
In the 28th minute Giorgi Nergadze attempted an outrageous effort from 40-yards out as he tried to chip Khune, who was off his goalline, but his effort went over the crossbar.
The game fell into a bit of a lull after that as neither team created any more significant chances on front of goal.
The half ended 1-0 in favour of Chiefs.
The second half saw both teams attacking early on with Chiefs having the first effort on goal three minutes after the restart. Knowledge Musona met a corner-kick from Tshabalala at the front post, but his flicked header went just over the crossbar.
A minute later and Lerato Chabangu was unlucky not to draw his side level as he met a cross from the right, but his powerful 12-yard header was superbly saved by Khune.
In the 54th minute Tshabalala played Nkhatha through on goal, but Greg Etafia was quickly off his line to make a brave save as the two players collided when going for the ball.
Second half substitute Siyabonga Nkosi came within centimetres of finding Amakhosi’s second goal in the 70th minute when he curled a 16-yard shot narrowly wide.
Two minutes later, however, and Chiefs did doubled their lead when Musona broke through on goal and cleverly chipped the onrushing Etafia, 2-0.
In the 76th minute Willard Katsande should have put the result beyond doubt. A Musona free-kick from 24-yards out was brilliantly saved by Etafia; Katsande, though, was there to latch on the rebound, but he fired wide from 14-yards out with an empty net at his mercy.
Swallows tried to find their way back into the match, but Chiefs held firm to register their 11th league win of the season and go 10 clear at the top of the table.
