Chiefs And Wits Dominate U17 National Squad

A provisional squad for the South Africa National U17 team was named on Sunday (6 April) after the completion of the Safa U17 National Championship final which took place in Soweto.

Wits beat Kaizer Chiefs 3-0 on Sunday (April 6) to win the tournament at the Nike Football Training Centre in Pimville. The final was the last match of the multi-team event which has been underway since earlier this month.

The Wits junior side was largely superior in every department with Liam Jordan, son of the late former PSL star, Keryn Jordan, really standing out. The young midfielder made two of his sides three goals in the convincing victory. He was later named Player of the Tournament as well.

Other standout performers were Shungu Dutiro and Sanele Tshabalala from the Clever Boys. Dutiro was the tournament's top scorer with five goals, whereas Tshabalala was the Goalkeeper of the Tournament.

Nonetheless, the overall event was an opportunity for Safa's National Selection Coordinator, Shakes Mashaba, to run the rule over Mzansi's best up-and-coming young talent. The Amajimbos squad was later named and unsurprisingly much of the selection was made up of players from Wits and the Glamour Boys.

Mamelodi Sundowns also had a number of players called up into the national ranks as well.

Mashaba told Safa's official website why the tournament proved to be such a success, “We saw exciting soccer throughout the week. I would however, want to advice provincial coaches to interact more with some of these established academies to learn a thing or two in order to be at par.”
