News reaching the Siya crew is that Kaizer Chiefs have agreed personal terms with Katlego Mphela, and are now in discussions with Mamelodi Sundowns.
Chiefs announced on their official website yesterday that they had engaged in talks with the 29-year-old forward over a move to Naturena, with the player’s current deal at Chloorkop coming to an end in June.
There has been much speculation surrounding the future of the striker in recent weeks, with his representative, Glyn Binkin, explaining that a decision on his future was imminent.
Mphela was always expected to leave Sundowns after enduring a difficult spell at the club, although there was a whole host of teams, including SuperSport United and Orlando Pirates, all believed to have been vying for his signature.
Now it seems that the player has already made up his mind as to where he wants to be playing his football, though it remains to be seen as to whether he will be joining this month or when his contract expires in July.
The crew has learnt that Chiefs are currently in talks with Sundowns regarding the possible transfer of Mphela, as they look to offer a transfer fee to their rivals in order to secure him in time for the CAF Champions League registration deadline on January 15.
However, the decision lies with Msandawana, who have two options. They either let Mphela leave now, receive a nominal fee and save themselves six months wages, or continue to bench him until the end of the season before losing him to Naturena for free.
As we have seen in recent days, nothing is finalised until there is a name on the dotted line, though it seems that ‘Killer’ has set his mind on becoming a Glamour Boy, it just remains to be seen as to whether it will be now or in six months time.
