Kaizer Chiefs 7s rugby team were crushed in the later stages of the George sevens rugby tournament played over the past weekend (January 11-12). The team were entered as a part of an initiative by Chiefs to expand their brand over different sporting codes.
Chiefs put together a talented side which was coached by former Springbok international, Gcobani Bobo. The side was also said to have four former Springbok 7s players in their ranks as well. Nonetheless, it appears to the tournament didn't go according to plan for the Glamour Boys in the game involving the diamond-shaped ball.
Chiefs opened the tournament in positive fashion with a 22-19 victory over professional outfit, Western Province. However, subsequent group results didn't go their way and the team found themselves in the semi-finals of the plate section of the competition against Living Ball. On the plus side, the football arm of the club enjoyed better fortunes after destroying Swazi minnows, Mbabane Swallows, 6-0.

However, unfortunately for Chiefs supporters the rugby team were crushed 43-5 in the semi-final to crash out of the R1 million tournament in dissapointing fashion. Despite this setback for the second year in a row in this event, Chiefs are expected to continue their interest in expanding their brand into rugby into the foreseeable future.
