Drama As PSL Club Faces Transfer Ban

Word reaching the Siya crew is that Bloemfontein Celtic are the latest PSL club to receive a transfer ban from football governing body FIFA in a case involving their former goalkeeper Patrick Tignyemb.

Last year, Celtic were found guilty by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) for unfairly dismissing and not compensating the Cameroonian shot-stopper and the Free State club was ordered to pay the money owed to Tignyemb within a period of 45 days. Celtic, however, appealed the decision and it was recently revealed that it was rejected.

FIFA have now sent a letter to Celtic, Safa and to Tignyemb's lawyer to inform them that the goalkeeper should be immediately paid R3 million and that the club will not be allowed to sign any players for the next two years.

Safa CEO Tebogo confirmed to the Siya crew that they have received the letter from Fifa informing them of the situation at Celtic.

“Yes, we have received the letter.”

In a statement released by Safa, the local football governing body said they would refer the matter to the Premier Soccer League.

“The South African Football Association has noted the sanction imposed by FIFA on Bloemfontein Celtic FC over what the club says is a labour relations matter involving one of its former players.

“The correspondence from FIFA has been referred to the PSL for the attention of the club as stipulated in the FIFA Regulations, with a request that the club provides background to the matter and indicate which steps they intend to take.

“SAFA will provide further information as and when it is received from the club and the League.
