City Coach: If Benni Was Sent Off, The Same Should Have Been Done For Ertugral
Cape Town City's Interim Assistant Coach, Vasili Manousakis Thinks That Head Coaches Benni McCarthy And Muhsin Ertugral Should Have Received The Same Outcome
Cape Town City’s interim assistant coach, Vasili Manousakis says that if Benni McCarthy’s outburst of emotions warranted the sending off, the same should have been done for Ajax Cape Town’s Muhsin Ertugral.
The Cape Town derby was filled with emotion on Saturday, January 20, with City claiming the bragging rights four times in a row.
However, following the outburst in both technical areas on the field, McCarthy was subsequently sent off to the stands after storming in to Ajax’s technical area, infuriated by Ertugral who called on the official to issue a yellow card as City had 12 men on the field of play due to a miscommunication between the fourth official and the referee.
Speaking after the game, City’s interim assistant coach, Manousakis said that he would have reacted in the same way that McCarthy did, but thinks that maybe the 40-year-old should not have stormed out of his technical area.
“Would I have reacted differently to the way Benni reacted? No, I would have done exactly the same thing. The fourth official said that the player can enter the field of play. Between the fourth official and the referee, the communication was poor and once the player had entered, afterwards the opposing coach was calling for yellow cards and send-offs and it is not in the spirit of the game,” Manousakis told the media.
“And whatever happened between the exchanges of words, if that was the outcome for our coach, the same should have been for the other coach.
“I think, what our coach should have done, he probably shouldn’t have gotten out of his technical area, but if you look at the response from Coach Muhsin, it was exactly the same,” he added.
