Tinkler To Make Important Midfielder Decision

After struggling for game time under former Cape Town City coach Jan Olde Riekerink which led to a loan to AmaZulu, Zukile Kewuti could get a new lease of life at the Mother City outfit under the club’s new coach Eric Tinkler.

Kewuti will see his loan deal with Usuthu come to an end at the end of the season, and while the Durban-based club expressed an interest in signing the versatile player on a permanent deal, the KZN giants missed the deadline to exercise the option of keeping the 25-year-old on their books for the 2021/22 season.

"Kewuti does come back, he was loaned to AmaZulu. That loan agreement will come to its end. So he will be back with us for pre-season," Tinkler said during a press conference held by the club in Cape Town.

As things stand, the player is expected to report for pre-season at the Citizens, with Tinkler set to make a decision on the attacker in line with his plans for next season’s squad.

Since joining Usuthu at the halfway mark of the season, Kewuti has played 12 matches in the league, and has been impressive in the team’s remarkable season under coach Benni McCarthy.

City chairman John Comitis gave clarity on Kewuti's loan deal.

"I don't think Benni knew the facts of the deal. There was a pre-set transfer amount in the loan agreement. They could have exercised it at the end of April, and they (AmaZulu) did not take the option. It was in their hands and it was extremely reasonable.

"They had the option to keep him and they let the option expire. So we will see him at pre-season," Comitis added.

AmaZulu President Sandile Zungu recently lauded Kewuti for his performance after he excelled in the left-back position as he filled in for Sibusiso Mabiliso who had been suspended.
