Can Mphela Do It For Chiefs?

With arguably the biggest news of the January transfer window being officially confirmed that Katlego Mphela has signed a pre-contract to join Kaizer Chiefs in June, it remains to be seen just what kind of striker the Glamour Boys will be bringing on board in a few months time.

A look at Mphela's numbers in the past couple of seasons at least seems to suggest he has struggled to hit the kind of form that made him Bafana Bafana's third all-time leading goalscorer with 23 goals behind Shaun Bartlett (28 goals) and Benni McCarthy (32 goals). In fact, in the last two seasons in the PSL, it appears the striker hasn't delivered goals at the same unbevelievably prolific rate he managed earlier in his career.

The undoubtedly talented forward burst on to the scene locally in 2005/06 with SuperSport United where he bagged nine league goals. The then young marksman then followed this up with another six league strikes in 2006/07.

His obvious potential caught the attention of Mamelodi Sundowns who signed him ahead of the 2008/09 campaign. He perhaps took time to adjust to being at one of South African football's biggest clubs in his first year and managed just three league strikes in 13 appearances that year.

It was in 2009/10 that he exploded into life as one of Mzansi's best strikers - he became the leading striker in the PSL with 17 strikes in 30 matches. His continued rise as a reliable goalscorer continued when in the following campaign he bagged 13 league goals. He followed this up with another double-figure effort of 10 strikes as well in 2011/12.

However, in 2012/13 his form seemed to deteriorate as he managed just three strikes in 16 total league appearances. From the outside looking, it appeared Downs' constant changing of coaches affected his form. It also seemed there may have been a distraction from all of the speculation linking him with a move to Europe. Injuries also took a toll and questions began to be raised about his lifestyle off the pitch. A well-publicized car crash in July 2013 didn't seem to help his situation either.

The player has also found game-time difficult under Pitso Mosimane in the current campaign. With that said, the 29-year-old showed his class when he bagged a brace during a 15 minute cameo against AmaZulu last year. Nonetheless, with the Brits-born poacher having to wait another six months before he can join the Chiefs ranks on a three-year deal, it begs the question as to whether he can strike up his form of old for the Glamour Boys.

In addition, it's unclear how much valuable gametime he will recieve in his remaining months at Chloorkop now that Pitso Mosimane is aware he's leaving. And, if he doesn't play as much as hoped before June - it could take him some time to get back to something resembling his best form in 2014/15. Nevertheless, his class is not in question and Chiefs' faithful will no doubt believe he can go on to be a hero in the black and gold.

Have your say...Will Mphela's pedigree as a proven goalscorer eventually add to Chiefs' talented striking department in the long run? Or could it be argued that he could struggle given how little he's played and delivered since 2011/12?
