CAF Scrap Award, Leave PSL Stars In The Lurch

CAF Have Scrapped An Award That PSL Players Were Nominated For

Mamelodi Sundowns’ Denis Onyango and Jeremy Brockie of SuperSport United were left in the lurch regarding their CAF Award nomination, with their category being scrapped last minute.
The duo were both part of the top 10 finalists for CAF’s African Player of the Year (Based in Africa) when the shortlist was announced just over two weeks ago, and will have been quietly confident of making the top three following their exploits for Masandawana and Matsatsantsa.
Brockie, who was top scorer in the CAF Confederation Cup this season with 10 goals, says that – while he didn’t expect to win – it’s disappointing that there was no reason given for why it was canned.
He told the Siya crew, “I was very surprised... I jumped online to check the final three for the award and couldn’t find anything. Then I read that the award had been scrapped without any reason, which I thought was pretty strange. I’m sure there must be a reason behind it.
“After making the top 30 and then the top ten I was excited to see if I was going to be in the top three! I’m not saying that I thought I was going to win the award, but it’s very confusing and I’m sure the rest of the nominees are just as puzzled as myself.”
When asked if he’d spoken to fellow nominee, and last year’s winner, Onyango, he said, “No, I haven’t spoken to him. It’s so strange, surely they will give a reason at some point.”
Another category that was scrapped before the awards next month was the Referee of the Year.
