Motsepe Steps Up CAF Challenge

Patrice Motsepe’s pursuit of the highest football administration post on the continent made great strides at the weekend, and the Mamelodi Sundowns boss is expected to step up the challenge yet again later this week.

It’s been confirmed by SAFA, the federation that put Motsepe’s name forward as a candidate for the next CAF presidency, that he will unveil his manifesto on Thursday.

Motsepe, 59, has also received the backing on COSFA, whose president Phillip Chiyangwa pledged “unequivocal” support for the mining mogul in his quest to succeed Ahmad Ahmad at the top of Africa’s football food chain.

“Dr Motsepe is our candidate, and we endorse him fully. We believe he has the right mix of business acumen and connections in the corporate world to lead CAF through what will be a difficult period in the coming years,” Chiyangwa said in a statement.

He, along with Motsepe and SAFA president Danny Jordaan, met with Gianni Infantino, the FIFA boss, on Sunday in Johannesburg.

Infantino was invited to the COSAFA general assembly and there is no doubt he would have shared his experience with Motsepe having been successfully elected FIFA president in 2016 and won the votes for a second term three years later.

“We are at a crucial stage for African football, that is quite clear, and what is required is strong and decisive leadership. That is how we will grow the game and provide the future we all want to see for African football,” added Chiyangwa.

Motsepe is set to unveil his manifesto and plans should he be elected, but he faces stiff competition for the post.

Ahmad is ineligible to run for re-election because of a corruption scandal, while Augustin Senghor (Senegal), Jacques Anouma (Ivory Coast) and Ahmed Yahya (Mauritania) are all in the running for the March 12 election.
