SuperSport Out With Heavy Loss

CAF Confederations Cup Second Round Second Leg

Result: SuperSport United 1-4 Etoile du Sahel (1-5 on aggregate)

Date: 29 March 2014

Venue: Lucas Moripe Stadium

SuperSport United’s African hopes were dashed when they were beaten 4-1 at home by Tunisia’s Etoile du Sahel in the second leg of their second round Confederations Cup tie at the Lucas Moripe Stadium on Saturday night.

In the 25th minute Thuso Phala came close to drawing things levels on aggregate, but Ben Ayoub Aymen made a great save to stop Phala from close range.

In the 34th minute Mame Niang blasted an effort over the crossbar.

Disaster struck for the home side in the 36th minute when Michailou Drame pounced on a defensive error and put the visitors 1-0 up, meaning that SuperSport would have to score three goals to go through.

Bradley Grobler went close in the 42nd minute, but he dragged his shot just wide of goal.

Two minutes later SuperSport were awarded a penalty when Grobler was brought down in the box.

Lebohang Manyama stepped up to take the spot kick and brought the teams level as they went into half-time.

Two minutes into the second half Niang had a wonderful opportunity for SuperSport, but what looked an easy chance at goal went wide.

Edwin Gyimah tried a long range shot in the 52nd but it went flying over the bar.

Niang had another chance just before the hour mark, but his shot went wide again.

It was not be for SuperSport United though, as Etoile du Sahel scored again in the 64th minute, and once again it was Michailou who got his name on the sheet.

With nothing to lose SuperSport left just three at the back, as they pushed everyone forward, needing to score three goals in the last 25 minutes.

And it backfired when the visitors grabbed their third goal of night when Molinbi Yolissef made it 3-1 in the 75th minute.

Bennet Chenene came on for the last ten minutes and almost immediately made an impact, but his effort was saved by Aymen.

With seven minutes to go, Grobler tried a shot from a free kick, but it flew over the bar.

And the tie was wrapped up in the 90th minute when Tej Marouane made it 4-1.
