With speculation rife that Orlando Pirates are targeting Chippa United’s James Okwuosa and Issa Sarr, coach Roger de Sa has explained that he has no knowledge of any interest in the duo.
However, Chippa’s media officer, Lukanyo Mzinzi, confirmed that Okwuosa is on Bucs’ wanted-list. He said that more than one club have made enquiries into the 22-year-old’s availability, although admitted that he had no knowledge of Sarr’s link to Pirates.
De Sa told Soccer-Laduma, “I don’t know of any interest in these players. I’ve seen speculation in the media that Pirates are talking to them, but I don’t know anything about it. I had a meeting with my technical team and with my club today and there wasn’t any mention of these players at all.”
In a conflicting statement, Mzinzi said that the Nigerian defender has attracted interest from clubs within the PSL, after a promising first season in the PSL.
“There are professional clubs like Pirates that have enquired about our players. We’ve told them what the status quo is. Pirates have enquired about James. It is still a sensitive issue at the moment. But I can confirm that they did call enquiring about the player,” said Mzinzi.
It is believed that the Cape side may look to swap the central defender with William Twala. Twala, who has been called up to Gordon Igesund’s Bafana Bafana squad for the Cosafa Cup, was impressive for Chippa during the club’s tough season in the PSL.
Word is that the management of the Cape side want to keep Twala for next season, although the talented player is already with Pirates in Johannesburg for pre-season.
However, it remains to be seen if Bucs do pursue Okwuosa’s signature. Soccer-Laduma will keep you updated.
Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs will clash on July 27, with the title of 2013 Carling Black Label Cup champions up for grabs.
