Breaking: Football Restart On The Cards….

Word reaching the Siya crew is that the Premier Soccer League will go ahead and complete the balance of the 2019/20 season with a new date now proposed.

The PSL board of governors convened its virtual deliberations at noon today having postponed this crucial meeting from Friday following the death of chairman Irvin Khoza’s wife.

It’s believed the agenda was fairly obvious – to decide whether to cancel the rest of the campaign or to try complete the 100 or so matches in the Absa Premiership, GladAfrica Championship and the Nedbank Cup.

Khoza announced back in mid-March that football would be halted due to the Coronavirus outbreak and Kaizer Chiefs were log leaders in the top flight at the time with only eight matches still to be played, while Ajax Cape Town were in a similar position in the lower division and eyeing a return to the Premiership.

Initially, the PSL had proposed July 18 for the resumption of the campaign, but SAFA – who were told to oversee the process by the government, insisted on August 1, arguing that clubs must first comply with health and safety protocols and that referees were yet to be tested for both the virus and fitness.

SAFA confirmed at the weekend that match officials were ready, but were yet to communicate with the PSL regarding compliance.

After the back and forth, insiders privy to discussion on the resumption of football have informed the Siya crew that football is expected to return a week later and will most likely be concluded in the first week of September.

The BOG discussion is still ongoing and the Siya crew will have more information on this once there is an official statement from the league.

But it now looks likely that football is back!
