A late penalty by Kwabena Adusei was enough to seal a 1-0 victory for Ghana over Ethiopia and book their place in the quarter-finals of the African Nations Championship as winners of Group C.
Seidu Bancey had the first chance in Bloemfontein for Ghana when he rose highest in the box, but the striker could not find the target with his 5th minute header with Ethiopia keeper Jemal Bushra Tassew beaten.
The Black Stars then had two chances in quick succession with Gebreyes Adane Girma failing to find the target with his 13th minute free-kick, and five minutes later Abdul Latif Mohammed fired high and handsome after winning the ball in midfield.
Ethiopia then came close to taking the lead when they caught Ghana on the break, but Saladin Bargecho could not direct his header on target with 36 minutes on the clock.
The Ethiopians came close again before the half-time interval when Ephrem Melore Ashamo produced a fantastic bicycle-kick but it went just over the crossbar.
The second-half started with the Ethiopians coming close on the hour mark through Oumed Oukri but the striker could not test the Ghana shot-stopper.
The Black Stars finally broke the deadlock after striker Seidu Bancey was brought down in the area and the referee pointed to the spot.
Kwabena Adusei then stepped up to send the keeper the wrong way and slot the 76th minute penalty, assuring the Black Stars a spot in the quarter-finals.
