Birds Held By Team Of Choice

ABSA Premiership

Result: Moroka Swallows 1-1 Maritzburg United

Date: 21 September 2013

Venue: Dobsonville Stadium

Moroka Swallows and Maritzburg shared the spoils at the Dobsonville Stadium this afternoon, drawing 1-1, despite a first-half dominated by the Dube Birds.

In the fourth minute Giorgi Nergadze's effort from wide out left was comfortably dealt with by Shu-Aib Walters in the Martizburg goal.

The Dube Birds had most of the early momentum, while Maritzburg, who scored both their goals in their mid-week game in the opening ten minutes, couldn't make any real progress in the final third.

Ayanda Nkosi, in only his second game for the Team of Choice, did do some good work in the 14th minute, getting into the box, holding up the ball, then dribbling past the defence, but his cross couldn't find Ashley Hartog and was cleared.

Larry Cohen had a chance from a corner won by Siyabonga Nomvethe in the 17th minute, but his header at the far post was never on target.

Two minutes later Yakubu Mohammed had Maritzburg's first shot at goal, but he couldn't get any power into his shot and it was easily dealt with by Greg Etafia.

In the 22nd minute Nomvethe had a chance to give Swallows the lead, but his header, from a Levy Mokgothu cross, went wide.

In the 29th minute Nomvethe found himself one-on-one with Walters, after a superb pass from Lerato Chabangu, who was having an impressive game, but Walters made an excellent save as he closed Nomvethe down as he tried to shoot.

Lefa Tsutsulupa had a chance with a header in the 32nd minute, but although he could get it on target, it went straight to Walters as he made another comfortable save.

Manqele ran onto a good Tsutsulupa pass in in the 41st minute, and broke clear of the defence, but his left-footed shot was well saved again by Walters, who a minute later thwarted Nomvethe, as he dived onto his attempted cross.

At half-time the score remained goalless, despite Swallows dominating, the Dube Birds finding Walters in impressive form in the Maritzburg goal.

A re-organized Maritzburg had a decent effort at goal in the 48th minute but Philani Zulu's shot was well saved by Etafia who got down low to stop the shot.

Manqele was close again in the 51st minute but he couldn't get a proper touch on Chabangu's cross and the ball went out.

Nomvethe came close in the 64th minute, but his shot from outside the area, flew just over the goal.

Chabangu had a shot three minutes later, but he couldn't get enough power on it to beat Walters.

Maritzburg United punished Swallows on the break in the 69th minute, when Thokozani Sekotlong got the ball from fellow substitute Dillon Sheppard and blasted it home to give them a 1-0 away lead.

In the 76th minute Swallows finally got the ball past Walters, as Luvhengo Mungomeni headed the ball home from a cross by substitute Dikgang Mabalane to make it 1-1. Walters will have to take some of the blame, as it was his attempted quick clearance which went straight to Mabalane to set up the goal.

Nomvethe had an attempt from the edge of the area in the 82nd minute, but it missed to the right.

The Team of Choice came close in the 85th minute after a cleared corner, but Michael Morton's deflected shot went straight to Etafia.
