Wits’ Horror Start In Numbers

Bidvest Wits may be one game away from winning their third trophy in the last 18 months, but in the Absa Premiership Gavin Hunt’s side is struggling to find their feet.

Last night’s defeat against Mamelodi Sundowns leaves them 15th on the league table with one-third of the season gone, with only Platinum Stars are currently on fewer points than the Clever Boys at this stage.

Hunt has dealt with injuries to several key players from last season such as Buhle Mkhwanazi, Thulani Hlatshwayo and Darren Keet, with not a single player managing to play all of their matches so far this campaign.

Here’s a look at some of the numbers regarding the reigning champions’ nightmare start to the 2017/18 league campaign.

27 – The number of players used by Hunt in the league alone. Only three players – Sifoso Hlanti, Amr Gamal and Bongani Khumalo – have played more than seven of the 10.

15 – Goals conceded. The Clever Boys let in just 22 goals all season as they went on to win the title in 2016/17, the second best defensive record in the division.

14 – Average shots per game. Wits have been huffing and puffing but with no end result. They average more shots per game than any other team in the division.

6 – Defeats. Sundowns’ victory last night means that Wits have now lost as many games this season as they did through the entirety of their title-winning campaign.

6 – Goals scored. Last season Wits were only outscored by one team in the Absa Premiership, but after 10 games this time around just two have scored less than them.

2 – The number of league games that Wits have won since winning the Absa Premiership in May. They’ve lost seven of the 11 matches since clinching the title.

Do you think that Wits can turn things around?
