Benni McCarthy is proud of how hard his side has fought so far this season but admits that he could do with a ‘special’ player.
City worked hard to stay in the top eight of the Absa Premiership league standings for the entire season, although their lack of goals has cost them a chance to challenge for the title.
Speaking to the media, McCarthy, who had to make do without the likes of Lyle Lakay, Teko Modise and Craig Martin against Mamelodi Sundowns this weekend, admits that results could be different if he had the luxury of choosing between a Jeremy Brockie, Khama Billiat or a Percy Tau.
“Beggars can’t be choosers, so if you can change between Brockie, Percy Tau, Aubrey Ngoma, Sekotlong, (Themba) Zwane, Vilakazi, Billiat…” McCarthy told the media.
“You give me any one of those names and a goalkeeper maybe, then I have got something special.
“But unfortunately, with what we have, we make do and we have done exceptionally well and I’ve got to give each and every player in that dressing room (the) credit and respect that they deserve because they fought tooth and nail to be in the top eight from the first game of the season, up until five more games left to go and we have not dropped out of the top eight once. In fact, we were in the top three for the whole season up until the games we lost. Lots of quality but it is not the same quality you find at your Chiefs, Sundowns, Pirates and Wits,” he added.
Cape Town City are positioned 6th on the Absa Premiership league standings.
