Benni On City's January Transfer Window

Benni McCarthy On Cape Town City's January Transfer Window

By Soccer Laduma - Dec 19, 2017 11:42 AM

Cape Town City head coach, Benni McCarthy has spoken about what type of players he would like to bring to his side in the upcoming January transfer window.

With just weeks to go before the January transfer period, there have been several names being bandied about the City corridors, as McCarthy looks to strengthen his squad ahead of the second half of the 2017/18 domestic campaign and the upcoming CAF Confederations Cup competition.

Without giving away too much, the City head coach revealed that he would like to add more experience to his side as he looks to prepare his charges for their debut in the African continent.

City have already been linked with several names in the Premier Soccer League, with the likes of Brilliant Khuzwayo and Dove Wome being the talk of the town at this point.

“I think, now it is a good time to have a closer look and identify the guys who I think that can add value to this team and help make us stronger in our pursuit of a top eight finish,” McCarthy told the media after his side’s 1-0 win against Amazulu FC last Friday.

“A couple of quality (players) would not be bad and to get some good, experienced players (who) have played already for teams that have played in the CAF. It would help because we do have a lot of young boys, I am not saying that I want old players, just guys with some experience in Africa because you don’t want to go into the unknown and get the shock of your life.”

“It would be nice to have quality who is going to know what we are up against when we go to Africa,” he added.

My recommendations as a domestic league follower for some years now, I would recommend Robert Ng'ambi. One of the most underated player of the psl era, he will strengthen the mid defence, assist the back four and even score goals when least expected.

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane is rumoured to be lining up a January bid for Cape Town City winger Aubrey Ngoma. Mosimane has made no secret of his admiration for Ngoma and previously incurred the wrath of Citizens boss John Comitis for his public courtship of the former AmaTuks, Orlando Pirates and MP Black Aces forward. According to a source quoted by ISELF, the Brazilians' coach is, however, set to renew his attempts to bring Ngoma to Pretoria. "Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane is a big fan of Ngoma. He still wants him in his squad. Sundowns will put in another bid for him in this transfer window. "They want to pay City the money and give them another player on top of that. They want to give City [defender] Kwanda Mngonyama for free, so that they can get Ngoma." Comitis, however, looks like he's standing firm on his reluctance to sell City's prized asset. "Nobody is leaving us. We are not selling any of our players, even if there's a good offer. All we want to do is to beef up our squad. I'm working very hard to secure three new signings," he said. Those three players, according to the report, are Brilliant Khuzwayo, Mohammed Anas and Mandla Masango.

CATCH us if you can. That’s the message Mamelodi Sundowns are sending to the rest of the PSL teams. At the halfway mark in the season, Sundowns are the only team showing clear signs of winning the title as they lead with six points ahead of Kaizer Chiefs with two games in hand. Sundowns is also the only team showing consistency in the league having won their last three matches in a row. Tonight they host Cape Town City at Loftus Versfeld looking to increase their lead to nine points heading into the New Year and to have a breathing space. A win for Sundowns will see them have nine points lead with one game still in hand and this will put them in a driving sit ahead of the New Year. But with Cape Town City having defeated the Brazilians twice last season home and away, Downs coach Pitso Mosimane said those previous results will count for nothing tonight. “When you look at Cape Town City saying they beat us twice last season or we never beat them, we can gest react too emotionally,” Mosimane said. “It has nothing to do with that, there is a different time. I remember Platinum Stars was beating us almost all the time. So was Moroka Swallows. “Bloemfontein Celtic was beating us all the time, now it’s a different story. We just go game by game. “We were beating Chiefs all the time, now they are beating us.” Mosimane, who was pleased with his side 4-1 thumping of Bloemfontein Celtic on Sunday – with goals from Thokozani Sekotlong, Percy Tau, Themba Zwane and Tiyani Mabunda, is expecting an attacking approach from City tonight. He was full of praise for City coach Benni McCarthy for what he feels he has done with the team since he took over at the beginning of the season. “Benni is an attacking coach, his team goes forward, they try to do that and they are moving up and are one team that is playing football. “Celtic play football as well, they don’t sit back, Benni plays, Baroka FC plays. Benni is a legend, he has done so well for South Africa and we should not forget that. “He is coming into his space and he needs to be given a chance. “I’m happy that he is doing well. I just want to support our local guys to be there and hang in there.” City are coming into this match with their confidence high after beating AmaZulu 1-0 in their last league match on Friday.
