Benni McCarthy got into the final three candidates for a job in the Scottish Premiership, and it has been described as a ‘great experience’ for him as he eyes his next coaching move.

McCarthy is back in Europe after leaving Cape Town City recently, and it is thought that he’s eager to try and land himself a job that side having enjoyed his first spell as a head coach by picking up the MTN8 trophy in his first season at the club.
Bafana Bafana’s all-time top scorer, who recently celebrated his 42nd birthday, recently put himself in for the job at Heart of Midlothian in Scotland, but narrowly missed out to Daniel Standel – a coach who has relegation experience from his time with Barnsley in England.
McCarthy’s long-time agent, Rob Moore, explained that it was a new experience for the former City man, especially given that it’s the first time that he’s actively applied for a position after being headhunted for his last two jobs.
Speaking to the crew, Moore said, “Hearts are a big club with a lot of history, and for him to have reached the level of interview that he did was a great experience… Benni had been headhunted for his previous coaching roles at Saint-Truiden and Cape Town City, so it was new ground for him going into an interview situation. But the Hearts people were fantastic and Benni wishes Daniel and all those at the club only the best in their next chapter.
“Benni’s looking to try and forge a good name for himself in Europe now after he worked – and won silverware – in South Africa.”
Speaking in this week’s edition of Soccer Laduma, McCarthy spoke of his experience talking to the club, saying, “It was brilliant. I’m an ambitious person and I want to take that into my coaching… Hearts are a big club and I figured that I would only get an opportunity if I put my own name into the hat, I have to be proactive about things.
“For me to get into the final three for the job when there were some major names who sent in their CVs alongside mine was a big thing for me, and I’ll take a lot of lessons from the conversations that we had.
“I’ll keep looking for opportunities, not just here in Europe but all over, and I’m excited about what lies ahead wherever my next step is.”
McCarthy is currently in Scotland with his family as he weighs up his future, and will continue to keep his eye open for his next challenge, wherever that may be.

The Citizens, meanwhile, have won just one game since they decided to part ways with Bafana’s all-time top scorer, scoring only one goal in their last four games as they remain struggling down at the wrong end of the Absa Premiership table.
