Cape Town City completed the signing of a former Ajax Cape Town midfielder and Benni McCarthy revealed why the player chose to return home.
After seeing out his contract with Ajax on June 30, Travis Graham went on trial in Europe, looking for a chance to impress abroad, however, after not playing for an entire season, his chances were very slim.
Unfortunately, the player was unsuccessful in trying to land a move to Europe, with the midfielder subsequently returning to South Africa, putting pen to paper on a professional contract with the Citizens.
“We know he is not going to be as fit as everybody else in the league, but it doesn’t stop him from being a quality player, I chased him when he was at Ajax, I wanted him last season already and unfortunately his ambitions were to go to Europe, he went on trial there and unfortunately he has been out the game for too long and the trials was not too successful,” McCarthy revealed.
“Yeah, he came back and obviously I saw a great opportunity because I think he was one of the most talented young players that we had in midfield, we look at Teko, we admire and we love what he does and then if we are ever going to get players close to what you got when you had the likes of Teko Modise, Surprise Moriri, and I think within this kid, Travis, you have as close to the quality, very European like but build in South Africa,” he added.
