Benni McCarthy Explains Why He Chose Robyn Johannes As A Captain
Cape Town City head coach, Benni McCarthy has explained why he entrusted Robyn Johannes with the captain’s armband following Lebogang Manyama’s departure.
The Mother City-based club officially announced the 31-year-old as the permanent captain of the team, taking over the armband which was left behind by Manyama, who now plies his trade for Turkish outfit, Atiker Konyaspor.
Speaking at a press conference, McCarthy admitted that it was an easy decision for him to choose Johannes as his new captain, saying that the defender possessed all the qualities that are needed from a captain.
“I think, it was a very easy decision for me, I know Robyn a long time, you know, I share the same views as him. He is a player who leaves everything on the training pitch and for me, that is what it is about,” McCarthy said at a press conference yesterday, September 11.
“Since I walked through the door, that is what every single player has given me, all I have asked for is hard work, determination, dedication and train every day like it is your last and every single player has given that.”
“But, yeah, on the pitch you know you have to select one leader, even though we have got so many - Robyn leads by example, he is a feisty character and he is a stand up guy. For me, it’s about when your teammates are getting kicked, how do you respond and he is always the first one there for the fight.”
“He (Johannes) respects everyone in the dressing room, whether you are a trialist or a first team or young player, he respects them. He gives advice and those are all qualities that you see from a day to day basis and that is how you select who you think is the person fit enough to lead the team. I couldn’t have chosen a better leader for that role,” he added.
