Benni’s Shock Decision On Marquee Signing

Benni McCarthy, according to Siya sources, has made a decision on a marquee signing that could very well come as a shock to the football fraternity.

It’s understood that the AmaZulu coach has added veteran Siphiwe Tshabalala to his list of players deemed surplus to requirements at the club.

The former Kaizer Chiefs and Bafana Bafana star joined Usuthu in October last year, two months before McCarthy was appointed coach.

But ‘Shabba’, 36, is yet to make an official debut for the Durban-based outfit having spent more than a year without kicking a ball before his return to the Premier Soccer League was confirmed by AmaZulu’s new owner, Sandile Zungu.

Tshabalala left Chiefs in 2018 for a stint in Turkey, but returned a year later and had been without a club until Usuthu signed him.

The move, at the time, was seen as a big coup and a perfect fit for a club with a rich heritage and culture to sign a player of Tshabalala’s stature – the 2010 World Cup poster boy.

However, three months after he joined the midfielder has only made a single appearance, lasting only seven minutes in a 2-0 defeat to Golden Arrows, a DStv Premiership clash McCarthy watched from the stands two days after his official appointment.

The Siya crew understands that while McCarthy has the utmost respect for Tshabalala, his Bafana teammate during their playing days, he has no room for him in his team and has since put him on the transfer list.

It’s not expected to be a popular decision with his boss, owner Zungu, given his close ties with the player and the fact that he was considered a marquee signing for the 2020/21 season and his arrival coincided with the family taking over the club.

Contacted for comment, Tshabalala long time agent, Jazzman Mahlakgane said: “I can only speak about this if there’s official word from the club. For me this is speculation and I don’t want to get involved in speculation.”
