The Citizens recorded a 1-0 win over second-place Orlando Pirates on Saturday afternoon to gift wrap the title for the Brazilians, although they hardly needed help after beating City's cross-town rivals Ajax Cape Town 3-1 at the Lucas Moripe Stadium.

McCarthy says Pirates did well to make a challenge, but ultimately Sundowns would have proved too good anyway..

"Unfortunately for Pirates, it’s too little, too late but they made a wonderful effort for the last push in the league and congratulations to Sundowns for being league champions," McCarthy told SuperSport after the game.

Moving to the win over Pirates, McCarthy feels the Citizens have the Soweto giants' number after beating them for the second time this season.

“Before the game started I said Pirates is on good form but we have the ingredients, we know how to play against them. We have beaten them the last time they were on this kind of form," he added.

“Today tactically we allowed them to have the ball in the areas they can’t hurt us. Also, we looked to exploit the spaces behind that is left by their full-backs and use the quality of (Ayanda) Patosi. It worked fantastically.

“I’m delighted because of the efforts of the players. They could have had nothing to play for and packed up but they wanted to give a good send off.”
