Baxter: Why I Am Back In SA

Stuart Baxter is back in South Africa after a brief spell in India, and the coach has explained to the Siya crew why that is the case.

The Englishman was dismissed with immediate effect from his job at Odisha FC in the Indian Premier League last month after his shock comments in a television interview, and had to exit the club’s bio-bubble mid-season.

Baxter did apologise for his remarks in a statement to the Siya crew.

The former Kaizer Chiefs, SuperSport United and Bafana Bafana coach arrived in SA over the weekend as he looks for a fresh start.

“My feelings are that the best thing to do is be near family until things get back to normal. I’ve been in a bio-bubble for five months and at some point you ask yourself ‘well, what if something happens to me or one of my kids’,” Baxter told the Siya crew.

“It’s such a long road to get to stand next to somebody, quarantine, air travel difficulty – so family is important during this time. But at the same time you’ve got a duty to the game, but the biggest duty is to yourself and your family.”

The 67-year-old’s son Lee is a goalkeeper coach at Chiefs, but Baxter isn’t in a hurry to jump on to the next project.

“We will be in SA until around mid-April, and then we go back to Sweden and the job we look for will be one that gives us a little bit of security, not a glamour job or a sporting challenge until things become normal again. But that is difficult because no matter where we are, it’s far from normal,” he explained.

“We have all soldiered on with far from normal circumstances. And I don’t think if you are not in that sort of world you can know the difference. I’ve been in a bio-bubble for five months and it’s the longest bio-bubble on the planet, in global sport. I know the effects on me and the players, so right now I want to be close to family.”
