Baxter: Big Man Showed Us

After Kaizer Chiefs beat Polokwane City 3-0 this evening, a happy Stuart Baxter still lamented about the missed chances, but praised Tefu Mashamaite, who scored two, for showing the others how it's done.

Baxter believed Chiefs should have won by a lot more, and was disappointed by his team's lack of composure, but couldn't really complain after his side ran away clear winners.

"We missed too many chances for my liking, but the big man showed us the way, but in the circumstance, I thought it was pretty comfortable.

"We switched it off a few times near the end there, but maybe that's understandable when you're in the cup and 3-0 ahead.

"It should have been six, we had some unbelievably good chances, and they played a very high line, gambling, to get back into the game, and so we went in directly behind them, more often than we would do.

"We usually play between the lines a bit more, but we didn't need to, and some of those runs should have got us the goal.

"But 3-0 in the cup, and you're in the next round, you should be happy.

"We weren't finding any forward combinations in the first-half, we were playing around at the back, then playing long, and we weren't finding anything between their lines so we were really never getting our heads up, and then given movement, and that meant we didn't get any real combination play.

"When we did, like in the first few minutes when Yeye got through, we looked very dangerous, so the message at half-time was that we had to get into that position more often.

"I'd be worried if we weren't getting any chances.Set pieces are a critical part of the game, and we know that, and it's helped us out a few times, and the lads work hard at it. If we weren't creating chances apart from the set pieces I'd be concerned, but what it is, is the composure, to turn those chances into a higher goal ratio. But we do have to start putting people to the sword more early."
