Legendary Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper, Banks Setlhodi, has reminded fans that Itumeleng Khune is not Chiefs’ new captain, but rather is taking the captain’s armband back from Siphiwe Tshabalala.
Khune was handed the armband last week Thursday, following Tshabalala’s season as the club’s captain. This after Khune’s injury problems saw him hand over the captaincy to Tefu Mashamaite, who has since departed the club.
“I don’t think Khune took the captaincy away from Tshabalala, because you’ll remember that he was captain before,” he told Soccer Laduma. “Tshabalala has been the standby captain.”
Setlhodi went on to say that it was the right decision, given that Khune’s leadership qualities exceed those of Tshabalala’s.
“For me, he’s even better than Tshabalala, because he’s vocal and he’s playing at the back where he has time and a chance to see the game better than Shabba,” he continued.
“And if you look at Shabba, he hasn’t been performing well because some players need mental strength, and it depends on how vocal you are and if the players receive the message well. And Khune has that.”
