Chiefs Legend Backs Khuzwayo & Pieterse

Legendary Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper, Banks Setlhodi, believes young Amakhosi shot-stoppers, Nhlanhla Brilliant Khuzwayo and Reyaad Pieterse, must be given time to develop their game at the highest level.

Both keepers saw game-time in 2013/14 when Itumeleng Khune was ruled out of action with injury. While both never really let the side down, there was some evidence their relative inexperience affected the confidence of Chiefs' defence.

This is something Setlhodi believes will improve if both players are given enough time to improve their leadership and communication skills.

He told the Siya crew, "It can be difficult with these young boys. Sometimes they can get stage fright. That's the difficulty when you don't get game-time in say a reserve league to get experience. It's difficult if you don't play for two months and then you come back and have to perform. Look, the goalkeeping department isn't all about stopping the goals, it's about organising the back-four."

He added, "Look at Orlando Pirates when Senzo Meyiwa isn't there. The defence panics! If you look at those young boys (Pieterse and Khuzwayo), when they play the backline is panicking. It's because they don't have the assurance of being communicated with and guided properly. Talking to your defence isn't about making noise! It's about giving the right instructions, but I don't doubt them. I believe they've got the ability in them. Make no mistake - give them time and then they'll come right."
