Palacios: What Youngsters Can Learn From Maela
Augusto Palacious commends Innocent Maela's patience
Orlando Pirates development mentor Augusto Palacious has told Soccer Laduma that he is proud of defender Innocent Maela following his recent call-up to Bafana Bafana.
The 25-year-old defender who is a product of the Bucs youth development programme has quietly gone about his business this season, racking up 19 league starts for the Soweto giants. His hard work has not gone unnoticed as he recently earned a national call-up to be part of Stuart Baxter’s side which is currently in Zambia preparing to face the host nation in the final of a four-nation tournament.
Speaking to Soccer Laduma the development coach said he is very proud of the defender and the strides he has made in his career.
“I remember Innocent and I’m really proud of what he has achieved,” said Palacios.
“The key thing about Innocent is that he was patient and focused on what he needed to do be done in terms of playing at club level. It’s important for young players to learn to be patient and to develop as players,” added Palacios.
Meanwhile, Maela will look to help his Bafana teammates overcome hosts Chipolopolo in the four-nation tournament final. Both Bafana and Zambia needed penalties to see off Angola and Zimbabwe respectively to reach the final.
