Palacios: What Youngsters Can Learn From Maela

Augusto Palacious commends Innocent Maela's patience

By Soccer Laduma - Mar 23, 2018 05:06 PM

Orlando Pirates development mentor Augusto Palacious has told Soccer Laduma that he is proud of defender Innocent Maela following his recent call-up to Bafana Bafana.

The 25-year-old defender who is a product of the Bucs youth development programme has quietly gone about his business this season, racking up 19 league starts for the Soweto giants. His hard work has not gone unnoticed as he recently earned a national call-up to be part of Stuart Baxter’s side which is currently in Zambia preparing to face the host nation in the final of a four-nation tournament.

Speaking to Soccer Laduma the development coach said he is very proud of the defender and the strides he has made in his career.

“I remember Innocent and I’m really proud of what he has achieved,” said Palacios.

“The key thing about Innocent is that he was patient and focused on what he needed to do be done in terms of playing at club level. It’s important for young players to learn to be patient and to develop as players,” added Palacios.

Meanwhile, Maela will look to help his Bafana teammates overcome hosts Chipolopolo in the four-nation tournament final. Both Bafana and Zambia needed penalties to see off Angola and Zimbabwe respectively to reach the final.

@skillo messiah Be positive brother these guys are special players. They are obviously going to improve as time goes by but in all honestly we haven't seen such dynamic players in the PSL in a while. The way they attack is a marvel to watch. They will learn & grow.We need to remember how much weight playing for a club such as Orlando Pirates holds. Its not for the faint hearted even to just be a Orlando Pirates supporter takes a lot of courage it's not just for anybody you've got to have a big heart

@lmbuyeleni I also admit over the years Bucs have lost their identity so now Bucs are currently re building their youth structures & they have been having meetings where Micho, Rhulani & Augusto Palacios have been trying to liase in terms of trying to exchange ideas on how the club can improve it's structures. They are trying to create a situation where the youth teams play exactly the same way as the first team.Read Rhulani's last interview on SL.Also see the U17 Bucs team in last week's Future Champions tournament. Our youth teams are now tryini to train & play in a format that is similar to how the 1st team is operating.

When you read some comments on SL you wonder if people just comment for the sake of commenting or they just don't understand football.Maela is a left back by trade,he plays as a Left Wing back in a 3.4.3 which has been predominantly used by Micho this season so I become disapointed when so called football fans dont seem to watch football & understand football formations. It is such an attitude that needs to change as people need to learn to watch football openly & objectively. Some people here just comment for the sake of bashing players & the teams they don't like & it's unfortunate because most of these people have no football brains nvm being able to even kick a ball.

I wonder what position is Maela playing I Zambia because even at pirates I don't understand his position.Who is this guy coaching junior pirates playing in current tournament?Where are pirates ex players.I cannot understand the philosophy of the team. Not all ex players can coach but it becomes worse if you are coached by a guy who never played soccer even in a garden. That's why our football has no direction. Its the same from rural areas to psl.I can't trap the ball in rural areas and a psl player can't wow kunzima.

Sifiso Hlanti and Tebogo Langerman are still ahead of him in the game. Maela's build up play is good but his end product or delivery in the final third is very poor. I was very surprised that Stuart Baxter actually selected him ahead of Tebogo Langerman.
