Anele Ngcongca: It Was Painful To Watch Bidvest Wits Lift The Title
Anele Ngcongca admits that it was painful for Mamelodi Sundowns to watch Bidvest Wits lift the 2016/17 Absa Premiership title but thinks that his side didn’t deserve to win the league as they dropped unnecessary points.
Sundowns narrowly missed out on clinching the league title in the 2016/17 season, as they fell just three points short of champions Wits.
However, looking back, Ngcongca believes that dropping points to the likes of Platinum Stars, Baroka FC and Maritzburg United killed Masandawana’s chances in the race for the league title and as Sundowns prepare for the 2017/18 campaign, the 29-year-old believes that his side will change their attitude when facing the same challenges next season.
“Yes, it was painful. We shot ourselves in the foot and we can’t blame anyone. We gave it away; we had so many chances. I’m not talking about the match against Cape Town City which we lost,” Ngcongca revealed in an exclusive interview with Soccer Laduma.
“Look at the match we lost against Bidvest Wits! We were supposed to get at least a point and that point was going to put pressure on them. They went to Free State Stars and lost, while we drew against Baroka FC on the same day at home. When you are chasing the title and then give away three matches at home, then you don’t deserve it. Platinum Stars, Baroka and Maritzburg United... those are the matches that killed our chances.
“We conceded two goals against Platinum Stars, two goals against Baroka and two goals against Maritzburg. Do we then deserve to win the league? No, let’s be honest. Well done to Wits because they showed character. We will go back to the drawing (board)” he added.
