Sandile Zungu, the new owner of AmaZulu, has revealed buying Usuthu or Orlando Pirates was always one of his ambitions.
The businessman, who heads up Zungu investments has been lauded for purchasing AmaZulu from former owner, while keeping the culture and history of the club alive by retaining its name and location.
Speaking to Soccer Laduma edition 1195, Zungu reveals that he had a plan to buy Usuthu, back in 2006; however, he only saw his dream materialize 14 years later.
A staunch Orlando Pirates fan, he shared his ambitions to purchase the Soweto giants, however he was aware that the club was not for sale.
“Well, firstly, let me tell you… I love football and it is a very good sport. Once I got into business, I saw an opportunity to acquire a soccer club, but obviously I may have not been financially ready at the time. But I did plant a seed in (Patrick) Sokhela in 2006, as you said. I said, “You know what, I would love to buy into AmaZulu.” And we laughed it off.
“But I knew it was quite serious and I told myself that if I have to buy any team, it will either be Orlando Pirates or AmaZulu. But then Pirates is not for sale. It’s not a team that has changed hands in a long time and Dr Irvin Khoza is doing a fantastic job running the team. it’s (Pirates) the team I support, and I would love to be associated with the team I support.,” Zungu said.
Zungu also discusses:
- His plans for Usuthu going forward
- Why the club will win the league by 2032
- His plans in the transfer market
