AmaZulu On Beating Arrows: It Was Payback Time

AmaZulu head coach, Cavin Johnson, has described his team’s victory over Golden Arrows as ‘payback time’.

After their 4-1 loss against Arrows in the first round league match, AmaZulu wanted nothing less than a win in their match over the weekend.

Usuthu came out as 2-1 winners at the King Zwelithini Stadium on Saturday night, thanks to the two goals scored by Siyethemba Mnguni after Knox Mutizwa had opened the scoring for Abafana Bes’thende.

“Both teams were playing a little bit of a wait and see game, but at the same time, we tried our best to get inside their box. It was like playing against a counter-attacking team - if you are not clever enough and you do not move the ball around properly. Then the counter-attacking team will always catch you.

“We came out a lot smarter in the second half, but they scored a goal. We spoke about the goal that we conceded. It was exactly like how we said they wanted to score. They try to get the ball behind you in the space and score – that’s what they did. But the (AmaZulu) players put in a good effort as to how we wanted to play and credit should go to them because they played well the whole game,” Johnson told AmaZulu’s official website.

AmaZulu had Michael Morton sent off, while Arrows’ Danny Venter was also given his marching orders.

“They scored two goals, but the red card that we received was not necessary. That’s football – now we have lost one of our key players. He is suspended for the next few games. The last time we (faced Arrows) they beat us 4-1 and everyone said we got a hiding. A 2-1 win is exactly the same thing. Whether you lose 10-0 or 1-0 it is still the same thing.

“So, it was payback time for AmaZulu. We are happy to get the three points that we fought for,” concluded the coach.
