Former Wits and Santos goalkeeper, Wayne Roberts, is keeping busy by playing amateur football in Cape Town, while working on getting his coaching qualifications.
The 36-year-old Roberts began his playing career at Cape Town Spurs in the 1996/07 season, but made a name for himself at the Clever Boys and The People’s Team.
He received one Bafana Bafana cap and briefly played for Orlando Pirates, with some believing he could have scaled greater heights had it not been for his wayward lifestyle.
Roberts retired last year, after parting ways with Santos, and now keeps himself fit by playing for an amateur side.
When the Siya crew caught up with him, he said, “Nah, I’m around. I’ve been playing amateur soccer since I hung up my boots. I would like to coach, but I first have to get my badges. But it’s not easy. Going from playing to coaching is not as easy as people think, but I’m still pushing for it."
