SAFA Presidential Hopeful Confirms Candidacy
All Systems Go For SAFA Presidential Candidate
Chief Mwelo Nonkonyana has confirmed his candidacy for the upcoming South African Football Association’s (SAFA) presidential elections.
SAFA is scheduled to hold its elections congress on 24 March. Nonkonyana, who is the former Vice-President of SAFA, will be one of the candidates for the position of the footballing mother body’s presidency.
“I am honoured to have been requested by a number of members to avail myself for the position of SAFA President in the upcoming Elective Congress,” said Nonkonyana in a statement.
“I’m grateful for the support from many football administrators and South Africans since I announced my availability to contest. I will not steep low to an utterance by a member of the National Executive Committee that is aimed to tarnish my image in South African Football alleging that I am not eligible with the expression contravening FIFA rules regulating the process for the Election of a President.
“I wish to assure all members that there is nothing contained in SAFA, CAF and FIFA Statutes preventing me to stand. I am determined to effect the necessary changes in leading a team of trusted and tested leaders to take SAFA to greater heights. Poor performance inside and outside the field of play, as well as maladministration in South African football, will become a thing of the past,” he added.
“I have met with a number of regions and it’s all systems go from here until March as we finally take South African football and our long-suffering Association away from the terrible image that is has been tainted with over the years. We need people that can stand up for the right of football and the right for our game to head into a new professional era with clean governance. We have started to officially clean out the SAFA closet,” concluded Nonkonyana.
