Ajax Cape Town's U-19 side won the Copa Amsterdam at the Olympic Stadium on Monday night after beating German side Borussia Monchengladbach 5-4 in a penalty shootout. The game ended 2-2 after extra-time.
The South Africans opened the scoring through Ielyaas Wesson when a smart cross pass left the Germans exposed at the back and Ajax carried that lead into the break.
Borussia responded in the soaking weather to net an equaliser after the break as conditions really began to affect the game.
With the score locked at the full-time whistle, extra-time was needed and again Ajax hit the front - this time a free-kick beat the goalkeeper with help from a puddle.
The Germans responded within five minutes though and ensured that the game would go the distance.
The shootout that ensued was dramatic with both sides missing their second penalty. Borussia then hit the crossbar with their first sudden death spot-kick and Ajax failed to respond.
The Borussia goalkeeper then sent his strike against the post and Ajax would not let them off a second time as they fired in the winner.
Ajax booked their place in the final with a 1-0 win over Brazilian side Fluminense, with Michael Kwongh netting the decisive goal.
