Ajax: Serero Is Injured

Ajax Amsterdam say that South African midfielder Thulani Serero has picked up an injury, after he underwent an MRI scan on his return to the Netherlands from international duty.

There was uproar in the Mzansi football fraternity last weekend, when the 23-year-old was kicked out of the Bafana Bafana camp because of ‘ill-disclipine’ ahead of the nation’s World Cup qualifier against Botswana.

Gordon Igesund’s men went on to record a comfortable 4-1 victory, and after the game the head coach explained that he had released Serero because he claimed to be injured despite the team’s doctors saying otherwise.

Serero’s team have a big Uefa Champions League game against Barcelona coming up this month and the midfield man told Igesund that he was worried about missing the game through injury.

Speaking to the Siya crew before flying back to Holland, the talented midfielder insisted that he was not faking injury and his claims now seem to have been backed up by his club.

Not only did Ajax explain that Serero has picked up an injury to his abdomen, which could be related to his groin, but they also said that they weren’t sure if he would make this weekend’s game against Kamohelo Mokotjo’s PEC Zwolle.

Ajax’s press office told the crew, “He had a scan yesterday and the scans showed the medical staff that there was some small damage on his abdominal muscle and we know that he had some complaints last week.

"It’s not his groin, but it’s possible that there is small damage there too because he has had complaints there.

“The medical staff at Ajax are being very careful with him, he will train with the team today and they’ll see how it’s going. They’ll decide if he will be in the squad for this weekend on Friday and have to see if it’s going well or if he’s getting complaints again.”

Ajax take on PEC on Saturday before travelling to Barcelona on Wednesday.
