Banyana Banyana totally humiliated the Union of Comoros 13-0 in their African Women’s Championship qualifier at the Stade Said Mohamed Cheikh Stadium in Moroni on Friday.
Banyana Banyana started off the game the stronger of the two and almost grabbed an early lead through Portia Modise, but her effort went just over the crossbar following a corner.
Modise did make up for that miss soon after and broke the deadlock in Moroni, with the Banyana star making it 2-0 soon after.
Leandra Smeda then made it 3-0 to the visitors with a powerful header, with the South Africans dominating the first 45 minutes and Comoros struggling to cope.
Vera Pauw’s team added a fourth through Sanah Mollo’s 36th minute strike, and then Modise completed her hat-trick just before the half-time break to make it 5-0 and all but wrap up the result for the visiting side.
The first-half hat-trick hero Modise grabbed her fourth of the game early in the second period giving Banyana a 6-0 lead.
Smeda then added to score-line, grabbing her second of the game to make it 7-0 with just 10 minutes played in the second-half.
Banyana continued to add to Comoros woes, scoring another six goals to end the game with a 13-0 hammering of their hosts.
Modise and Smeda both scored four apiece with Mollo grabbing a brace and Noma Ntsibande, Mamello Makhabane and Shiwe Nogwanya all chipping in with a goal each.
The victory all but assures Banyana a place at the African's Women's Championship in Namibia, where they will attempt to qualify for the World Cup.
“We prepared very well for the match, and I’m happy that the ladies have started finding the back of the net. We did not change the team, but we also gave other players a chance in the second half. We were dominating the game, the was not much competition from the start,” Pauw said to safa.net .
“Today was a good day for Women’s football and South Africa. A big thank you to our sponsor Sasol for always supporting us,” she concluded.
