You Choose The Team Of The Tournament
Soccer Laduma’s ‘Team Of The Tournament’ is a feature highlighting the top performers from the duration of the African Cup of Nations tournament in Equatorial Guinea.
Selections are based on the performances of players who stood above others in the continental showpiece that commenced on Saturday, January 17 and, ended on Sunday, February 8.
In the third and fourth place playoff on Saturday, February 7, hosts Equatorial Guinea took on the Democratic Republic of Congo to determine who would walk away bronze medallists. After the two teams played to a 0-0 draw after 120 minutes in muted circumstances at the Estadio de Malabo, after the home side had been booted out of the semis by Ghana, it all went down to spot kicks. The Leopards held their nerve scoring all four of their penalties to clinch third place at the tournament with a 4-2 shoot-out scoreline.
The curtain finally came down on the 2015 African Cup of Nations in Equatorial Guinea, with Cote D’Ivoire taking on Ghana in a repeat of the 1992 final in Senegal. Côte d'Ivoire won its first championship in that year, beating Ghana 11-10 on penalty kicks after a goalless draw.
After a 0-0 draw in 120 minutes, Cote d'Ivoire once again triumphed, defeating Ghana in the penalty shootout. The Black Stars have themselves to blame after letting a 2-0 lead slip through their fingers to eventually lose what could have been their fifth Afcon title. For Ivory Coast this was the end of a 22-year wait for another continental title, having last won it in Senegal. Veteran goalkeeper, Boubacar Barry, who started his first match since the tournament commenced, was the hero of the night as he saved and then converted the crucial spot-kicks that handed Ivory Coast a dramatic 9-8 penalty shootout win over Ghana in the Africa Cup of Nations final. French-born coach, Herve Renard, became the first man at the helm of a team to win the trophy with two different nations, after his triumph with Zambia in 2012.
The team will always be set up in a standard 4-4-2 formation, selected by Soccer Laduma's team of respected journalists.
The Soccer Laduma journos are currently in deliberation over the selections. In the meantime we want to hear from you who you think should be in the Soccer Laduma ‘Team of the Tournament’.
