Former Maritzburg United player Gert Schalkwyk could be given an opportunity to revive his football career at Mpumalanga Black Aces.
The skilful midfielder is on trial at the NFD side, as revealed in issue 807 of Soccer-Laduma, with the hope of helping the club in their quest for PSL promotion. Schalkwyk has been in the football wilderness since parting ways with Santos, after the side’s relegation to the NFD at the end of last season.
Aces’ media liaison officer, Gordon Masondo, confirmed with the Siya crew that Jacob Sakala and his technical team have given the player a chance to prove what he can offer to the squad.
“The player is still training with the team up until the technical team makes a decision on him. They haven’t made the decision just yet,” said Masondo.
Recent media reports had linked the former Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates midfielder with retirement from professional football, although the Klerksdorp-born player could be afforded another opportunity to play before ending his career.
